Texas Republicans Oppose Teaching Kids Critical Thinking in School Because It ‘Undermines Parental Authority’
The Republican Party of Texas recently adopted their 2012 platform (PDF)… it’s full of all sorts of horrible ideas (faith-based drug rehab, repealing the minimum wage, no gay people in the military), but one portion of it really sticks out if you care about educating children:
“We oppose the teaching of Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) (values clarification), critical thinking skills and similar programs that are simply a relabeling of Outcome-Based Education (OBE) (mastery learning) which focus on behavior modification and have the purpose of challenging the student’s fixed beliefs and undermining parental authority.”
That just happened. Seriously.
Republicans are against critical thinking because it could challenge what parents teach their kids, even when they’re wrong.
But what if the kids want to believe Creationism? Doesn’t matter! We can’t have them challenging their parents’ faith.
But what about teaching them to question what pseudo-historians like David Bartonsay? Nope! Just believe what you’re told. You’re too young to be asking questions.
But what about teaching kids to discern truth from fiction? Blasphemy! Whatever Republicans tell you is truth. Why question that?
Cenk Uygur summarizes the GOP thought-process perfectly: “Wouldn’t it be great if everybody in Texas was as dumb as we are, and then everybody would be Republicans?”
Meanwhile, the word “God” appears 12 times in the GOP Platform.
If you’re an atheist, the Republican Party isn’t even trying to reach out to you. Don’t give the satisfaction of your votes.

“Scumbag Christians…” Really? You’re the scumbag for saying that every fucking Christian has this view on gay people.
OH am I? The Christian doctrine explicitly defines homosexuality as a sin, as an abomination and something that is worth hell or, like in case of Sodom and Gomorrah, rain of fire destroying your town.
Now - depending on your particular denomination of Christianity the degree to which you condemn homosexuality differs, but I have yet to hear a any church official to claim that homosexuality is not a sin, that it is also a divine creation.
Personal beliefs of specific Christians are out of the question here because as we were able to see one might pick absolutely arbitrary set of commandments/rules and still call yourself Christian. You don’t condemn gays - some of your fellow men won’t call you a true Christian.
Besides, even those, who don’t persecute gays, most of these people oppose gay marriage (due to lifelong indoctrination and that empty buzzwords ‘sanctity of marriage’).
So yeah, most of Christians do persecute gays, oppose gay marriage and gay rights. Most of them will claim that God’s will is unknowable. The fact that YOU yourself don’t hate homosexuals doesn’t prove the picture is wrong. And it is enough to visit few christian forums in the internet to see how many Christians do condemn gays. And these Internet people - that is just a fraction of all Christians.
So no, I don’t think so.
Once again, you’re overgeneralizing. Don’t be a fucking prick about something you know nothing about. I came from a Catholic school where both priests said that homosexuality was not a sin, as did the entire school staff, including our lesbian receptionist. We never had parent complaints and her kids never got picked on at the school.

And once again - no, I am not overgeneralizing. The fact that in your entire school a secretary was lesbian and nobody said anything does not mean much. Maybe they were afraid of a lawsuit or whatever - dunno and not particularly interested.
What is REALLY interesting - if that was a Catholic school and they said to you that being gay is not a sin - they lied to you. Catholic church explicitly condemns homosexuality. And so to speak - what kind of school lies to it’s students? And since I know a lot of Catholics - I don’t really believe you. Besides - even if that was true that doesn’t change the fact that majority of Christians treat gay people as sinful abomination. Your one example does prove that NOT ALL Christians are the same. But then again - I never said ALL of them were. Even though in that regard majority is, unfortunately.
Actually Catholic Church condemns homosexual acts. So if you are gay is not a sin but it is a very big sin if you want gay sex!
To be precise about CC - yes, that is right. Although it is like - you’re allowed to be human, only breathing is sinful. Since we all, like, make sex.

Anyhoo, my mom was the music minister at First Baptist Van Nuys in the 80s when Kirk Cameron wandered into the church drunk and loud. My mom sat him down in her pew at the front of the church and he converted that day. My mom created this monster. She has yet to write a letter of apology to the rational community.
